about

A 50 minute recording documenting a 1960’s Stella Stellaphone ST470/00 reel-to-reel tape machine playing a 16 second loop of sounds derived from grinding/rubbing several sizeable flint nodules together. No effects pedals, digital processing or editing was utilised for this experimental harsh noise wall project. One of the flint nodules featured a naturally occurring hole which acted as a handy capstan for the magnetic tape to run through.

Based on this recent short video work: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYhyhcp2rSc&t=45s

The wall itself is reminiscent (in my opinion) of a crackling fire complimented by the gentle whirring of the tape machine in the background. As the recording progresses the textures change very slightly, this is due to the rough surface of the flint nodule damaging the magnetic tape. Listeners may also notice towards the end of the recording the tape machine begins producing a distinct clicking sounds as it struggles to play the loop.
